Zena Charter Review Commission Recommendations to be Discussed by City Council

The City Council acknowledged the work of the Charter Review Commission, which has spent six months reviewing the city charter and making recommendations. A work session is scheduled for the second meeting in July (July 23rd) to discuss these recommendations. Council members will need to decide which amendments to present to voters by a deadline of August 27th, potentially requiring an emergency ordinance process to meet introduction deadlines for the next meeting on July 9th. Council members expressed appreciation for the commission's time and professional presentation.

Zena City Council Approves One-Year Moratorium on Data Centers to Study Zoning

The City Council introduced an ordinance to institute a one-year moratorium on the establishment or commencement of data centers within the city of Zena. This measure is intended to provide time for the city to study the concept, as the current zoning code does not specifically identify data centers as a use. The moratorium prevents applications for data centers for one year, allowing for research into appropriate standards and regulations. The council emphasized that this is a proactive step to avoid situations like Urbana, where land was already sold before regulations were in place, and that no data center projects are currently pending in Zena. The mayor expressed a personal desire to prevent data centers from being built in Zena and to develop zoning that could keep them out of the town.

Zena Fishing Derby Breaks Records with 170 Participants, Strong Community Support

The City Council discussed the success of the recent fishing derby, noting a record-breaking participation of 170 individuals, which surpassed previous years' highs of 60-70 and even 75 participants. The event was made possible by numerous sponsors and volunteers, including Mr. Kley, Walmart (Zena Super Center), Speedy Zone, Fish and Tackle, and Council President Wes Smith through Better Images. Walmart provided staff to help, cook food, and donated hot dogs, buns, chips, and water. Approximately 400 people attended in total, with an estimated 600 hot dogs consumed. The event organizers expressed gratitude for the city's support and anticipation for next year.

Zena City Council Considers Rezoning for Hotel and Commercial Development on Upper Bell Road

The City Council introduced an ordinance to rezone property at 805 Upper Belark Road and a portion of the property at 817 Upper Road from A1 Agricultural District to RB Regional Business District. The rezoning includes a 2.787-acre property at 805 Upper Bell Road and a 1.444-acre portion of a larger property at 817 Upper Bell Road. The applicant requested this rezoning to allow for the development of a hotel and one or two commercial outlots, likely for food retail. The Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval after a public hearing, and city staff also endorsed the rezoning. The ordinance introduction is for council consideration, with a public hearing scheduled for the next meeting.

Resident Expresses Safety and Privacy Concerns Over Proposed Industrial Fence

During the audience comments portion of the meeting, Cole Patterson raised concerns about a proposed 8-ft tall fence with barbed wire at the top planned by Mckenley Industries for the property behind his residence. He expressed worries about safety, particularly for his young children, due to the history of storms in the area and the potential for the fence to resemble a prison. Patterson noted that the company had removed existing greenery and the newly planted spruce trees are insufficient for privacy. He stated his desire for Zena's growth not to come at the expense of existing families.
