Community Members and First Responders Honored for Heroic Actions During Recent Fires
The City Council recognized individuals for their heroic actions during recent multi-unit fire incidents. On May 30th, Logan, Kelsey, and Claire assisted in evacuating residents from Chapter's Living assisted living facility. On May 31st, Brandon, Clayton, Carl, and Daniel (a firefighter and paramedic) helped evacuate residents from an apartment building. These recognitions highlight the courage and selflessness of community members and first responders in times of crisis.
City Council Adopts Social Media Policy for Official Accounts
The City Council approved a social media policy designed to establish consistent standards for managing, operating, and ensuring legal compliance of the city's official social media accounts. The policy covers content standards, public engagement, commenting, legal compliance (FOYA, Open Meetings Act), emergency communications, record retention, and clarifies when elected officials' social media activity constitutes official city communication. Additional training requirements are also included. The policy will go into effect on July 1st with the hiring of a new communications coordinator.
GPEDC CEO Highlights Regional Economic Growth, Workforce Development Initiatives
Chris Setti, CEO of the Greater Peoria Economic Development Council (GPEDC), presented an update on the organization's work. He highlighted successes in recruiting three companies to the region (a medical device factory from Singapore, an electric bus assembly plant from Canada, and an airplane mechanic company). Setti emphasized the importance of workforce development, mentioning the annual Career Spark event for eighth graders and the regional healthcare education consortium aimed at building a pipeline from middle school to healthcare careers. He stressed that workforce development is the cornerstone of economic development and that strong regional growth benefits Washington residents as well, as many commute to jobs elsewhere in the region. He also noted recent investments by companies like Komatsu ($28 million), Caterpillar, OSF, and John Deere.
Countryside Banquet and Catering Receives Grant Program Pay Request
The City Council approved the Washington Commercial Building and Property Improvement Grant Program pay request for Christy Lehood Cape, DBA Countryside Banquet and Catering, located at 659 School Street. This signifies a disbursement of funds related to the grant program, supporting improvements to commercial properties.
Council Discusses Potential Roundabout at Dallas and Krueger Road, Mentions Lakeshore Drive Project
The council discussed the potential for a roundabout at Dallas and Krueger Road, acknowledging that it's always possible but would likely require right-of-way acquisition from property owners. It was noted that one of the previous opposing property owners has since moved. The possibility of a roundabout was also mentioned in relation to the Lakeshore Drive to Freedom Parkway Extension project.
