Morton, IL Village Board Meeting - June 15th, 2026
Published: Jun 15, 2026
Village Amends Code to Address Unmaintained Landscape Areas
The village board considered amendments to Chapter 6 of Title 8 of the Morton Municipal Code regarding unmaintained and uncontrolled landscape areas and foliage. The ordinance aims to expand language on overgrown and nuisance vegetation, prohibiting certain species while allowing maintained natural landscapes like rain gardens and ornamental plantings. The intent is to balance property owners' freedom with the need to protect neighboring properties and public right-of-ways from negative impacts of unmaintained vegetation. The amendments were initiated by the zoning office to provide additional enforcement tools, responding to multiple requests regarding invasive species and overgrown properties.
Village Authorizes Sale of Former Silman Premises for New Home Development
The village board authorized the sale of the property located at 508 through 512 South 1st Avenue, formerly the Silman premises, to Carol S. Clicker. The property was destroyed by fire. The proposed sale price is $27,500, and the buyer intends to construct new homes on the site, which is seen as a positive development.
Village Approves Building Improvement Grants for Two Businesses
The village board approved two recommendations from the building and business district for building improvement grants. The first grant is for the Glover Smith Group at 100 South Main for new signage and landscaping, with a total project cost of $21,489. The second grant is for Amy and Brian Jones at 101 South Main (former Morton State Bank building) for brick repointing, exterior painting, and window replacement, with a total project cost of $42,630. The grant amount for the second project is $10,000.
Fire Department to Purchase New Stair Chairs with Grant Funding
The Director of Fire and Emergency Services requested to waive formal bidding for the purchase of two Striker Expedition stair chairs at a cost of $34,439.28. The purchase will be partially reimbursed through a grant from their insurance carrier, IPMG, covering half the cost. These chairs are intended to reduce potential injuries when moving patients from upper or lower floors.
Village Approves Funding for Annual Fireworks Display
The village board approved the allocation of funds for the annual fireworks display, splitting the cost with the park district. Each entity will contribute $15,000, for a total of $30,000, to ensure a display that is expected to be of good quality.
