Community Organization Proposes Safety and Amenity Improvements
Pastor Marcia of the Celebrate Life organization presented several suggestions to improve the city. These include: installing turning lane arrows on Camp Street (behind Walgreens) and Washington Street (behind Hardy's) for safety; enforcing leash laws for dogs and limiting pet ownership to three per household; designating an empty lot at Pershing Place and Washington Street as a small playground or dog park; and utilizing a fenced lot behind the riverfront parking lot as a playground. These suggestions aim to make the city a safer place to live.
Concerns Raised Over Utility Pole Placement on East Washington Street
Commissioner Sutherland raised concerns about the placement of utility poles in the 400 block of East Washington Street, noting that they are frequently hit by vehicles. He urged for discussions with SoCo to ensure that if poles are replaced, they are moved from the curb to the back of the sidewalk to prevent future collisions. He mentioned that while only mirrors have been damaged so far, the risk of more significant accidents remains.
East Peoria Fire Department to Provide Service Coverage for Northern Taswell Fire Protection District
The City Council approved Resolution number 2627-031, an intergovernmental agreement with the Northern Taswell Fire Protection District for service coverage by the East Peoria Fire Department. As Northern Taswell is disbanding, East Peoria Fire Department will take over approximately 45% of its coverage area, responding to fire and EMS calls. The district is transferring equipment, including a brush truck and two fire engines, and 45% of its tax levy to East Peoria. The agreement aims to ensure continued service for residents in the disbanded district's area, with Washington Fire Department covering the eastern portion. The Northern Taswell Fire Protection District will retain $10,000 and plans to sell its building.
Storm Brush Cleanup Scheduled for Next Week
Commissioner Decker announced a storm brush cleanup scheduled for the following week, to be conducted on normal garbage routes. Residents are instructed to place storm debris at the curb. The city's crews will pick up the debris, though timelines may vary depending on the volume. While there is no strict size limit, city officials reserve the right to address any perceived abuse of the service if the debris is not solely storm-related.
SCADA System Upgrade for Water and Wastewater Systems Approved
The City Council approved Resolution number 2627-032 for the SCADA servers and appliance replacement project for the city's water and wastewater systems, accepting a proposal from Hart Technology Inc. The cost is $84,409.20, though this is noted as an estimate as certain factors could change the final cost. The SCADA system is critical for the city's water and wastewater operations, and the current servers have reached the end of their useful life.
