Streeter Fire Department Provides Tornado Recovery Update and Highlights Community Response

The Streeter Fire Department provided an update on the recovery efforts following a tornado that impacted the community on June 11th. The tornado skirted the east side of town, leading to reports of a person trapped and people needing medical attention. The response included activating sirens multiple times (estimated 10-12), providing at least 30 minutes of warning, and issuing cell phone alerts. The tornado affected areas including the 12th Street, Saratoga, Sunberry, and Airport Road neighborhoods. The fire department, with mutual aid from surrounding communities (Ottawa, Grand Ridge, Lostant, and Marcel), conducted search and rescue operations, taking approximately 1.5 hours for primary and secondary searches. Four individuals were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, and three others sought treatment at the emergency room, totaling seven minor injuries, which was considered a positive outcome given the severity. An Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was established at City Hall for coordination. Utility restoration efforts by Ameren and Nicor Gas are ongoing, with some homes having services cut off due to severe damage. KMed reported 84 customers had services cut off for recovery efforts, while restoring power to 3,000 customers in the vicinity of Streeter. They also noted approximately 500,000 individuals in the region were without power. Debris management and tree trimming are continuing, with about 80% of debris moved. A multi-agency resource center was set up at North Lawndale Junior High School to provide assistance. Long-term recovery efforts include the Streeter Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund, which has received 42 donations totaling over $9,000. Images of the tornado path were presented, showing significant damage to neighborhoods like Barlo addition, Sunberry, 12th Street, and John Street, extending to Airport Road. Volunteer efforts are scheduled for the weekend to aid in cleanup. The city is also reviewing disaster plans based on past events, such as the 2010 tornado.
