City Acknowledges Staff Response to Severe Weather, Offers Aid to Streeter, and Celebrates Student Achievements
The City Administrator thanked city staff for their work during severe weather, including sounding sirens due to heavy hail and tornado warnings. The city expressed thoughts and prayers for the residents of Streeter and stands ready to provide mutual aid in public works, law enforcement, and fire services if needed. Additionally, the administrator mentioned that both Joseph Tiller and Narino Parisco won silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the state competition for internet networking, achieving a sweep for Pontiac.
City Council Approves Library Maintenance Tax Levy Resolution
The City Council approved Resolution 2026R004, which levies an additional property tax for library maintenance. This is an annual procedure where the library board requests a levy, and the council passes a resolution. The tax is 2% of the value of taxable property, generating approximately $25,000 for library maintenance. The resolution allows for a petition to be filed for a voter referendum. If no petition is filed, the levy will be automatically applied.
City Council Approves Redevelopment Agreement for Living in Color LLC Building Repairs
The City Council approved a redevelopment agreement with Living in Color LLC, owned by Donna Cumins, for repairs to her building at the rear of Centennial Plaza. The agreement, similar to one with Mil Street, involves the city reimbursing 75% of the repair costs for most exterior elements, including wood repair, concrete steps, railing painting, and brick repair/replacement. Notably, the city will cover 50% of the roof repair cost, which is a deviation from typical practice, to facilitate the project. The total city reimbursement is not to exceed $50,000. This initiative is intended to enhance the downtown area and encourage further development.
City Council Approves Advertisement for MLSS Recycle Pump and Gate Installation Bids
The City Council approved the advertisement for bids for the MLSS recycle pump and gate installation project. This is part of a three-part series of approvals related to the installation of a mixed liquor recycle pump at the wastewater plant for the nitrate removal initiative. The project aims to address the need for isolating the pump for repairs, which is currently not possible with the existing setup. The advertisement for bids is a necessary step before the council can award the contract.
City Council Approves Gate Procurement for MLSS Recycle Pump Project
The City Council approved the procurement purchase agreement for a gate for the MLSS recycle pump project. This stainless steel, manually cranked gate is necessary to isolate the discharge side of the mixed liquor recycle pipe, allowing the pump to be repaired if needed. The chosen manufacturer, Whips, was selected over RW Gate due to a lower cost of $10,000 and a faster lead time of four to five weeks, despite a current 14-to-16-week lead time. This procurement, along with the pump, is being done ahead of contractor bids to ensure the city meets its 18-month compliance commitment agreement, with installation expected by November.
