Honorary 'Frank Lloyd Wright Way' Signage Proposed for South Harrison Avenue
The committee considered a proposal to designate a portion of South Harrison Avenue as honorary 'Frank Lloyd Wright Way'. The request, brought forth by BJ Jervik, president of the Wright Heirs Kankakee organization, aims to honor the architect Frank Lloyd Wright, whose simultaneously built properties at 701 and an adjacent address on South Harrison Avenue are celebrating their 125th anniversary. The proposed signage would extend from Harrison Avenue to River Street, encompassing the two historic properties. Signatures from residents were collected, with some minor issues addressed regarding occupancy and submission of additional sheets. The proposal received positive feedback due to the historical significance of Wright's work in Kankakee, the influx of tourists it attracts, and upcoming improvements to the I-312 Court Street overpass that will feature a Frank Lloyd Wright theme. The committee voted to approve the request, forwarding it to the full city council for a vote. Further discussion involved the logistics of signage and the role of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation in approving such designations.
Honorary Street Sign for Ruby F. Nelson Proposed for North Skyler Avenue
The committee discussed a proposal for an honorary street sign for Ruby F. Nelson on North Skyler Avenue. The location is significant because Ruby F. Nelson operated a barber shop there for nearly 40 years, during which he trained many other barbers and served as a pillar in the community. He is recognized as the first licensed African-American barber in Kankakee. The proposal required signatures from residents within the designated area, which includes structures on North Skyler Avenue between two east and west roads. Despite initial concerns about the number and location of signatures, it was determined that the two signatures obtained from the three structures in the designated area met the requirement. The committee also reviewed an essay detailing Nelson's community involvement, including organizing alliances, leading recognition programs, hosting Halloween events, and coordinating feeding programs. The committee voted to move the proposal to the city council.
