Fire Department Addresses Storm Response, In-House EMT Training, and Community Engagement
Fire Chief Shane Adams reported on the department's response to numerous storms this year, including managing downed wires and assisting Public Works with clearing debris and securing downed poles. The department has successfully trained its first in-house EMT class, with two volunteer firefighters and one St. John resident becoming certified, aiming to conduct this training annually. Firefighters are also participating in community outreach, including blood pressure checks at the farmers market and engaging children with a combat challenge course at Freedom Fest. The department is preparing to hire three new applicants, with a plan for them to start by July 11th, and has received approval for an additional summer hire. The Chief also provided an update on a house fire caused by lightning, noting the family is safe and repairs are underway.
Town Amends Towing Service Fees and Prepares for New Bids
A resolution, 2026-06-23, was passed to amend the town guidelines concerning towing services. This amendment increases the not-to-exceed amount assessed for these services. Chief Lores indicated that the towing rates needed to be raised. Following the passage of this resolution, the town will issue RFPs (Requests for Proposals) to solicit bids from towing firms, a process that is typically required every two years. The updated rates will inform the upcoming bid process.
Town Developing E-Bike Ordinance Amid Safety Concerns and Incidents
The town council is actively working on an ordinance concerning e-bikes due to increasing safety concerns and incidents. Attorney Svetanoff is drafting the ordinance, and the town is considering two potential drafts, with an aim to adopt one soon. The discussion highlighted the need for clearer state laws and enhanced community education regarding e-bike usage. Multiple communities have already passed similar ordinances due to the dangers posed by e-bikes, particularly with younger riders. Incidents, including a child breaking a leg on an e-bike in Bramblewood and another in Edgewood, underscore the urgency of this issue. The police department plans to focus on educational enforcement initially, with potential for stricter measures later.
Jolliette Project Bike Path Development Underway; Road Paving and Curb Installation Progressing
The Public Works Director, Gabe Bernard, provided an update on the Jolliette Project, which aims to establish a bike path along the Jolliette corridor. The project is awaiting final plans from Dire Construction and is expected to begin soon, with the director expressing excitement about this improvement for the town. Additionally, road paving is underway in 'the gates' and on the road between Welch's and Jewell, with curbs being installed. This latter project was planned but delayed due to anticipated construction, and will proceed once heavy truck traffic related to ongoing construction concludes.
Town Accepts Deeds for Property Previously Held by Building Corporation
The Town Council formally accepted deeds for property previously managed by the building corporation. Clerk Treasurer Hernandez noted that the building corporation's debts for the building have been paid off, and the property will be deeded back to the town, effectively renaming it from the building corporation back to the civil town. This action was completed by the end of the week after the meeting, with the deeds being recorded. This resolves the administrative separation of the building from the town's direct ownership.
