Town Approves Bid for Decorative Street Lights on Main Street and Other Areas
The town council discussed and approved the bid for decorative street lights along Main Street and other areas. The project involves installing taller 35T poles from Main Street to Seminary and smaller decorative poles from Hart Street to Hartry, including the town hall and ENS. Midwestern Electric was the sole bidder for the project. Council members debated the cost and scope, ultimately deciding to approve the bid while continuing to gather information on a related pedestrian pathway project.
BZA and Plan Commission Approve Variances and Subdivision for New Home Construction
During the Director of Operations report, the BZA (Board of Zoning Appeals) meeting on the first of the month was discussed. The BZA handled variances for Andrew Drive for a new home construction and variances for a pre-existing home. The same individuals also presented to the Plan Commission to plat a two-lot subdivision for a new home. All approvals were granted, allowing the individuals to proceed with building their home.
Fire and Police Departments Report on May Activities, Training, and Equipment Upgrades
The Fire Department reported 189 calls for service in May, 466 hours of training, and 18 fire and life safety inspections. They successfully raised $2,100 for charity through a boot drive and participated in an egg drop event with Kaylor Middle School. Four personnel attended auto extrication training, and the department facilitated a tabletop disaster exercise focused on a simulated tornado. The new fire truck is expected to arrive in September, with extensive training and ceremonies planned before it becomes operational by the end of the year. The Police Department reported 719 incidents, 35 arrests, and 25 accidents in May. They secured a grant for 35 new radios, expected to arrive in October at no cost to the community. National Night Out is scheduled for August 4th.
Council Approves Donations and Resolutions for Uncollectible Debt
The Clerk Treasurer reported on donations received for the fire department ($200), police chief's discretion ($200), and K9 unit. A motion was made and seconded to accept these donations. Separately, the council considered and approved two resolutions related to uncollectible debt: Resolution 2026-14, which passed unanimously, and Resolution 2026-15, concerning uncollectible debt from property damage, which also passed unanimously. The latter resolution's write-off is a result of efforts to collect through the TRE system and legal means, establishing a pattern for future collections.
