City Secures $73 Million in Grants for Flood Protection Program
Jeff Waller, chair of the Flood Protection Oversight Board, reported that the city has been awarded $73 million in state and federal grants for flood protection efforts and plans to submit applications for an additional $44 million. This funding is crucial for advancing the numerous projects within the flood protection program.
Virginia Beach CVB Enhances Destination Marketing Through Diverse Campaigns and PR Efforts
The Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) reported on various marketing and public relations initiatives aimed at promoting Virginia Beach. These included the 'Happiness is' campaign, social media engagement, content creator partnerships, and an activation event in Philadelphia called 'The Drop'. Earned media placements, such as being named one of the top 52 destinations by the New York Times, significantly boosted visibility. The CVB also launched a surge marketing campaign in response to oceanfront incidents to restore visitor confidence and highlighted strong hotel occupancy rates.
Flood Protection Program Progress Includes Drainage and Roadway Projects
The City Council received a briefing on the Flood Protection Program, which includes numerous infrastructure projects. Among the projects under construction or in design are drainage improvements on Colonial Road and Oceanana Boulevard, and roadway projects on Eastern Shore Drive. Future activities include advancing projects like Lake Bradford and Church Point to design phases, and beginning construction on parts of the Windsor Woods permanent pump station. The overall flood protection program involves a significant financial commitment, with expenditures nearing $200 million and a total estimated cost around $1.5 billion.
Planning Commission Recommends Approval for Variances, CUPs, and Zoning Ordinance Updates
The Planning Commission recommended approval by consent for several zoning-related items, including a subdivision variance for 1117 Beautiful Street, a modification of conditions for gunsmithing at 1492 Backbay Landing Road, and a modification for a short-term rental at 207 79th Street. They also recommended approval for a four-level parking garage at 3100 Shore Drive, with additional conditions. Several zoning ordinance amendments to comply with state legislation were recommended for approval, covering solar facilities, wireless facilities, parking requirements, small lot single-family dwellings, and mobile homes. Additionally, the commission recommended approval for a conditional rezoning and CUP for an automobile repair garage at 3288 Dam Neck Road, and CUPs for adult daycare facilities. Several short-term rental CUP requests in District 6 also received recommended approval.
Virginia Beach Amends Zoning Ordinance to Comply with New State Legislation
The city is proposing updates to its zoning ordinance to align with state legislation passed in 2026. These amendments address solar facilities, building-mounted antennas, small wireless facilities, temporary communication towers, minimum parking requirements near public transit, single-family dwellings on smaller lots, and non-conforming mobile homes. The ordinance changes aim to ensure compliance with new state mandates while establishing regulations for these specific land uses and development standards.
