City Council Explores Options for Former Wythe Fire Station Building
The City Council discussed options for the former Wythe Fire Station building, located at 1944-2025 Kecoughtan Road. The options presented were to implement recommendations from the 2002-2025 Kecoughtan Master Plan, demolish the building and preserve the site as green space, or pursue adaptive reuse of the building and site. Staff recommended issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP) for adaptive reuse by August 31, 2026, with criteria including alignment with the master plan, development team capacity, design quality, financial feasibility, and sustainability. Council members expressed interest in community input and exploring adaptive reuse, with a preference for engaging developers with expertise in historic buildings before issuing a formal RFP. A phased approach involving consultation with historic preservationists, community outreach, and an RFQ was proposed to gather information and ideas.
