Community Member Advocates for Kindness and Social Justice, Criticizes Opposition to LGBTQIA+ Topics

Jackie Batterson, a resident and member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Peninsula, addressed the board regarding issues of kindness, racial and social justice, and the opposition to LGBTQIA+ topics in schools. She refuted the idea of schools teaching 'transitioning,' emphasizing that teachers are focused on education and not indoctrination. She criticized those who disparage vulnerable communities and stated her political view is wanting people to 'be alive and to have the life that they need.' She concluded with a quote stating that parents cannot pick and choose a child's identity.

Deer Park Elementary Student Wins First Place in VSBA Regional Art Contest

The School Board recognized Kingston Brown L, a fourth-grade student at Deer Park Elementary School, for winning first place in the elementary school division of the 2026 Virginia School Board Association (VSBA) Tidewater Region Student Art Contest for his piece titled 'Me'. The VSBA Regional Art Contest, established in 1989, promotes artistic talents of Virginia's public school students. The Tidewater Region Art Contest was judged on April 23rd by area school board members. Kingston was joined by his principal, Scott Meadows, and family and friends.

Minchfield High School Boys Soccer Team Honored for Region 5B Championship Victory

The Minchfield High School Boys Soccer Team was recognized for winning the Region 5B Championship. Players named include Marvin Bienman, Lehman Betar, Aiden Blatchard, Ariane Butachi, Joshua Centenno, Caleb Chattert, Bryce Filumi, Liam Forbes, Devin Gaskin Spearman, Giselle Gomez Sutatute, William Gorton, Thomas Gurgenas, Nathan Harvey, Amondo Maladando, Michael Morello, Charles Morral, John Neville, Nils Ocasio, Ian Per Pureira, Solomon Sanford, Jude Smith, Caden Stevens, Ethan Stouffel, Luke Stouffel, Jackson Wells, and Chase Wilson. Head Coach Bryce Phale, Assistant Coach A.J. Cassanyu, and Assistant Coach Ethan Larson were also recognized. Families and friends were acknowledged, along with Minchfield's principal Jason Howler, assistant principals Dr. Nicole Arrington and William Husteckler, and athletic director Jenny Nuttingcomb.

School Board Honors Student Representative Kyla P. Leggett for Service and Achievements

The School Board recognized Kyla P. Leggett for her service as the student representative to the School Board from July 2025 through June 2026. The resolution highlighted her active participation in meetings, her role as facilitator for the Superintendent's High School Student Advisory Group on Education, and her diligent fulfillment of duties while excelling in academics and extracurricular activities, including co-founding the Sunflower Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters Junior Circle and being accepted to Harvard University. She received a resolution, an award, and a gift. Her principal, Mr. Jason Holla, and family and friends were present. She will attend Harvard University in the fall.

School Board Approves Key Leadership and Administrative Appointments

The School Board approved personnel recommendations presented by Dr. Mitchell. These include Dr. Eleanor Blow for Chief Schools Officer, Ms. Irene Cooper for Director of Budget and ERP, Ms. Charisse Boyd as administrative assistant at Hydenwood Elementary, Ms. Amber Kamua as administrative assistant at Sedgefield Elementary, Ms. Nicolette Krause as assistant principal at Stony Run Elementary, Ms. Shayron Purnell as principal of Knollwood Meadows, and Mr. Edmund Rhett as assistant principal at Sanford Elementary. The recommendations were approved 7-0.
