Council Considers Roundabout vs. Improved Signal for Stanfield and Experiment Farm Intersection
The City Council reviewed a traffic impact study for the intersection of 41 Stanfield and Experiment Farm Road, presented by American Structure Point. The study, conducted over four years, analyzed crash data, traffic counts, and explored two primary improvement alternatives: an improved signal and a traditional roundabout. The consultants recommended the roundabout, citing significant reductions in crash severity, improved traffic flow, and lower long-term maintenance costs compared to the signal option. The estimated construction cost for both alternatives is approximately $4.27 million for the signal and $4.29 million for the roundabout. Funding would involve $2.57 million from ODOT, with the remainder from Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds, not the general fund. The project is tentatively scheduled for construction in state fiscal year 2029. Public comment included concerns about truck traffic, pedestrian safety, impact on businesses, and the effectiveness of roundabouts in general, with some supporting the roundabout and others favoring the improved signal or alternative solutions.
