EDC Update: Highway W Closure, Business Prospects, and Zoning Ordinance Rewrite
The board received an update on the Economic Development Commission (EDC). Highway W southbound from downtown is now fully closed due to construction, but access to Hanson's parking lot behind the church remains available via road blockage signs. The EDC also discussed potential new businesses and the upcoming rezoning ordinance rewrite schedule.
Salem Lakes Approves Share of 216th Street Culvert Replacement Project
The board reviewed the 216th Street culvert replacement project, located on 216th Avenue south of State Highway 50. The Village of Bristol has approved proceeding with the project and splitting the cost with Salem Lakes, as the street is a shared boundary. Staff explored grant opportunities but found no immediate funding. The project is proposed to be funded by $410,000 in stormwater funds carried over from the 2025 budget. The board approved awarding the project to KR contractors for an amount not to exceed $122,894.10, which represents the total project cost before the split with Bristol.
Village Board to Explore Ordinances for Short-Term Rental Properties
The board discussed and approved a motion to have staff and legal counsel explore options for regulating short-term rental properties, such as those listed on platforms like Airbnb. This discussion was prompted by resident complaints regarding properties used for parties and potential negative impacts on neighbors and community character. The board acknowledged the growing trend of short-term rentals, especially around the lakes, and the need for village oversight. Options considered included registration requirements, parking and noise regulations, potential room taxes (with limitations on how much revenue the village could retain), and safety measures like fire department access and water quality checks. The legal counsel noted that the law surrounding short-term rentals is still evolving, with ongoing litigation at the state level. The motion passed to direct staff to begin exploring potential ordinances.
2026 Concert in the Park Schedule Approved; Food Vendors Sought
The board approved the 2026 Concert in the Park schedule, which will feature concerts on the first and third Thursday of each month at Schnellfeld Park. The Parks Commission developed the schedule, which is being promoted heavily for the summer. The village is also seeking food vendors for three of the concert evenings and invites interested parties to contact the commission chair.
