Zion to Apply for $275,000 Grant to Demolish and Rebuild Abandoned Homes
The city council approved the submission of a grant application to the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) for the Strong Communities Program. The application seeks $275,000 to address abandoned homes in Zion. Seven abandoned properties on Emus, Enoch, Ezekiel, Galilee, Gilead, Ezra, and Edina streets have been identified as meeting program criteria. Upon demolition, the city plans to work with builders to construct new homes on the vacant parcels. The application deadline is June 30th.
6-Foot Fence Variance Approved for 4210 Highland Road Property
A variance was approved for a property at 4210 Highland Road to allow a 6-foot fence on the street side of the property. The Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval, noting that the fence would not interfere with traffic.
Zion City Council Denies Video Gaming Request for Anna's Marketplace
The city council denied a request to allow video gaming machines at Anna's Marketplace, located at 4551 Illinois Route 173. The owner cited a significant decrease in fuel sales due to competitors offering lower prices subsidized by gaming revenue. Staff expressed concerns about market saturation and cannibalizing existing gaming establishments. The motion to deny was approved.
Zion Purchases Rescue Vessel for Lake Michigan Emergency Response with $500,000 Grant
The City Council approved the purchase of a specialized emergency rescue vessel for Lake Michigan emergency response and training needs. The $500,000 grant appropriation will fund an Oceancraft Marine 9.5-meter rescue vessel, equipped with a fire suppression pump. This vessel will enhance life-saving and property protection capabilities along the Lake Michigan shoreline and will be housed at North Point Marina through an intergovernmental agreement with the harbor. The purchase was designated to Oceancraft Marine as a sole-source vendor to allow for immediate delivery and deployment during the current summer season.

A special use permit was granted for a property at 1823rd Street to operate a church. The building has a history of operating as a church since 1959. The Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval.
