Christine Palmary, Director of HR, was present to answer questions.
Gurnie Partners with Lake County for Washington St. and Milwaukee Ave. Intersection Improvements
The Village Board approved an ordinance authorizing an intergovernmental agreement with Lake County for intersection improvements at Washington Street (County Highway 22) and Illinois Route 21 (Milwaukee Avenue). These improvements are for safety and include dual left turn lanes, sidewalk, bike path, median sign, and street lighting. Lake County DOT is leading the reconstruction. Due to the project's expedited timeline, the village's cost participation for lighting and miscellaneous work was negotiated down to 33% upfront, with the balance due at project completion, as funds were not budgeted.
Gurnie Village Board Declares June 19th as Juneteenth Day
The Village Board approved a proclamation designating June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth Day in Gurnie. The proclamation commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, referencing the historical landing of Union soldiers in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, with news of freedom. It highlights Juneteenth as a celebration of African-American freedom and achievement, encouraging self-development and respect for all cultures, and urging reflection on collective history and the building of a more equitable society.
Gurnie Approves Demolition of Flood Plain Structures with Warren Township High School
The Village Board approved an ordinance authorizing an intergovernmental agreement with Warren Township High School District 121 for the demolition of structures at 4579 and 4621 McClure Avenue. These structures are in disrepair and located within the flood plain. The village has budgeted for the demolition and site restoration. The benefit to the village is compensatory storage credits for filling the flood plain, which can be used for future projects like the fuel island relocation at public works. Similar compensatory fill usage was noted for the former Dairy Queen site, which was used as an economic incentive for a gas station.
