Kenosha Unified School District Grapples with Budget Shortfall, Explores Referendum Options

The board discussed the district's financial outlook and potential budget reductions. The projected shortfall for 2026-2027 is $17 million, which the district proposes to cover using fund balance and reserves. The board reviewed various cost-saving measures, including increasing class sizes, closing Ruther High School, eliminating the Roosevelt enrichment program, reducing middle and high school sports, cutting elementary music lessons, and eliminating high school athletics and fine arts programming. The board also discussed the possibility of a November referendum to address financial challenges and the process of community engagement and polling to gauge support. Ultimately, the board voted to remove several program eliminations from consideration, including Ruther Pathways, Roosevelt enrichment, middle and high school sports, elementary music lessons, high school athletics, and fine arts programming. The board also decided to postpone the decision on whether to conduct a community poll and to target an April referendum instead of November.
