License Renewals Approved for Kennel, Tobacco, and Tree Services
The council approved the renewal of several licenses: a kennel license for Debbie Christensen (Pup's Playland), tobacco licenses for Cloud Trading Inc. and Holiday Station Stores LLC, and tree service licenses for Randy's Quality Tree Service and Root and Up Tree Service. These renewals are for the period of July 1st, 2026, to June 30th, 2027, and are subject to compliance with all city and state requirements.
First Consideration of Rezoning from Agricultural Open Space to Medium Density Residential
The council conducted the first consideration of an ordinance to rezone property from AOS (agricultural open space) to R3 (medium density residence district). The property is legally described as Lot 1, Block 1, Wells Subdivision, located west of North Highland Avenue and north of Lake Avenue. The Planning Commission and City Council previously recommended approval with conditions, which include screening the south property line, a stormwater plan for shared facilities with an adjacent lot, and providing cross easements for utilities, parking, and access.
Public Hearing Scheduled for Crazy Days Noise Variance
The council scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday, July 7th, 2026, at 4:30 p.m. to consider a noise variance request from the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce for the Crazy Days event. The variance would permit amplified music on Minnesota Street between 1st North and Center Streets on Friday, July 24th, 2026 (2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.) and Saturday, July 25th, 2026 (8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.).
City Acquires Armory and Field Maintenance Shop Properties for $1 Each
The council authorized the city manager and finance director to execute quitclaim deeds to acquire two properties from the State of Minnesota Department of Military Affairs for a purchase price of $1 per parcel. The properties are the New Ulm Armory at 205 North Broadway and the Field Maintenance Shop at 1523 South Washington Street. This acquisition allows the city to take ownership and begin evaluating future uses, including potentially issuing an RFP for the armory building and planning for the field maintenance shop.
