Donation of $1,500 Accepted for Women's Water Safety Program
Sue Westegaard made a monetary donation of $1,500 to accept and support the Women's Water Safety Program, held in memory of her mom, Helen, and best friend, Kathy. This program, now in its 10th session, has served 195 participants, with the upcoming July session already full and a waitlist. The program has expanded to include water aerobics warm-ups and safety topics like swimming in lakes, rip tides, proper safety gear, and ice safety. The donation will further support the program's success, which aims to help women overcome fear of water and become more comfortable and capable swimmers.
Shakopee Council Discusses Potential Ban on Stormwater Reuse for Irrigation
The City Council discussed a proposal from the Minnesota Plumbing Board that could ban stormwater as an alternative source for irrigation and other non-potable uses. This ban could negatively impact cost-effective practices, water conservation, water quality, flood reduction, climate resiliency, and local jobs, while also risking taxpayer investments. Examples of current stormwater reuse practices at Woodbury's stormwater pond, Cottage Grove City Hall, Eagle Valley Golf Course, and Health East Sports Complex in Woodbury were highlighted as potentially being affected. Concerns were raised about the potential health risks associated with irrigating with collected stormwater due to contaminants like fertilizers and dog feces, although the City of Shakopee's current practices, such as using chlorinated water at Lions Park splash pad, are considered safer. The council expressed a need for more information and a decision deadline of June 23rd. There is a strong opposition to restricting individual residents from using rainwater for their gardens.
EDA Approves Purchase for Affordable Housing Townhome Project
The Economic Development Authority (EDA) approved a Resolution (R 2026-004) authorizing the acquisition of property located at 1211 4th Avenue East and the assignment of the purchase agreement to the Scott County Community Development Agency (CDA). This property will be used for affordable housing, specifically a townhome project. The city will utilize LAHA funds to assist in the purchase, with the CDA securing the remainder of the funds and partnering with a private developer (Trellis) to build the housing. This decision followed community feedback on a previous concept for an apartment building at the same location. The CDA will conduct outreach to surrounding residents regarding the townhome project.
