Weston Authorizes Renewal of $25 Million Revolving Credit Agreement for Emergencies

The City Commission is considering a resolution to renew a revolving credit agreement with Truist Commercial Equity Inc. for a line of credit not to exceed $25 million. This line of credit is intended for emergency funds during a declared state of emergency and to finance emergency capital improvements. The city manager has already signed an extension to the current agreement, which was set to expire. This resolution would authorize the city manager to renew it annually on a negotiated basis without a sealed bid process. The city has over $50 million in its disaster reserve, and this credit line would serve as an additional safety net for significant storms or multiple events within a season, especially considering potential delays in FEMA reimbursement.

Weston Considers 5% Increase in Local Business Tax Rate

The City Commission held the first reading of an ordinance to amend the code of ordinances by increasing the local business tax rate by 5% effective October 1st, 2026. This increase, authorized by Florida statutes, is permitted every other year. The last adjustment was in October 2024. The business tax revenues support the city's general fund, including public safety and parks and recreation, and help offset reliance on ad valorem tax revenues. The estimated revenue from this increase is $40,000 per year over the next two years. Commissioners discussed the impact on businesses and the rationale behind the increase, noting it hadn't been raised since 2017 and is comparable to CPI adjustments.
