City Approves 'Mayor and Commissioner for a Day' Event Logistics
The City Commission approved adding the 'Mayor and Commissioner for a Day' initiative to the agenda for discussion and potential approval. The event, scheduled for June 29th from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., aims to engage youth in civic participation. Commissioner Harrison moved to add the item, emphasizing the need to finalize logistics, specifically the event's timing. The original request was from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., but was adjusted to 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. to accommodate parents and volunteers, with a two-hour rehearsal period included. The IT staff will be available to support the event without incurring overtime costs.
Vice Mayor Urges Community Engagement and Neighborliness
The Vice Mayor highlighted the importance of community involvement and neighborliness, especially for seniors. She urged residents to check on their neighbors, introduce themselves, and engage with the community, emphasizing the 'We Care City' motto. A community involvement engagement event is scheduled for July 9th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hazel P. Rogers Multipurpose Center to encourage resident participation in finding solutions.
Legal Challenge Filed Against Ballot Language for House Joint Resolution 1F
The city attorney provided an update on the challenge to House Joint Resolution 1F, concerning its ballot language. A group called 'Save Our Voters from Misleading Ballot Language' argues the language is unconstitutionally biased, misleading, and inaccurate. If the challenge is successful, the court will require more neutral language within 10 days. If unsuccessful, the current language will appear on the November 2026 general election ballot. Further updates will be provided, and written guidance on Commission communication regarding this matter will be distributed.
City Commission Ratifies April Financial Reports; General Fund Shows Surplus
The City Commission ratified the Financial Service Department's filing of financial activity reports for April, period 7 of fiscal year 2026, as required by city code. The report for April 30, 2027 (presented in the meeting on June 9, 2026), indicates a healthy general fund with revenues of $24.3 million and expenditures of $18.9 million, resulting in a surplus of $5.3 million. Expenditures are generally within budget, except for police and fire services, which pay in advance. Proprietary funds, including Stormwater, continue to operate at a deficit due to capital expenditures and grant revenue recognition. Solid Waste and Building Services also showed deficits. Fire Rescue, CRA, and Gas Tax funds showed surpluses.
Vice Mayor Encourages Resident Participation and Neighborliness
The Vice Mayor also wished Mr. Patrick Green a happy birthday and thanked attendees. She emphasized the importance of collective effort ('every hand put into the pot') to improve the city and encouraged residents to bring their voices and concerns to the dais. She reminded attendees about the community involvement engagement on July 9th and stressed the importance of hydration due to rising temperatures. She also highlighted the significance of being neighborly, especially towards seniors.
