Resident Criticizes Village Hall Closure Due to Computer Glitch, Urges Better Contingency Planning
Resident Mary Pitco expressed dissatisfaction with Village Hall closing for the entire day due to a computer glitch. She suggested that basic transactions like paying water bills with checks, for which handwritten receipts could be issued, should still be possible even if systems are down. She highlighted the inconvenience for residents who take time off work to visit Village Hall and find it unexpectedly closed. Pitco urged the board to consider contingency plans for serving residents during system outages or emergencies, stating that simply closing for the day is not an acceptable solution.
Resident Disputes 'Town Hall' Label for Meeting, Emphasizes Need for Unfiltered Public Questions
Resident Pete Polehammer expressed disappointment with the previous week's meeting being referred to as a town hall, stating it was not a true town hall. He explained that a town hall allows for spontaneous questions from the floor, unlike the previous meeting where questions were pre-submitted and cherry-picked. Polehammer asserted that a town hall is a forum where attendees can ask questions without prior knowledge of what those questions will be, and that the prior meeting did not meet this definition, leaving many issues unaddressed.
Village Hall Renovations: $18.5 Million Allocated for Potential Upgrades and Modernization
The Village Board discussed potential renovations for Village Hall, which has been allocated $15 million from the State of Illinois in addition to $3.5 million previously allocated, bringing the total to $18.5 million. The process will be long and involve community engagement for design, layout, and funding. A stipulation for renovations in Hillside is an internship program, requiring a village monitor. The initial step will involve issuing an RFP for architects or an architectural firm. The process is not expected to be completed this year but could begin with applications if funds become available. The board also considered phasing the renovations, potentially building an addition or a second building to house departments like Public Works, which needs more space. The discussion also touched on reallocating and reutilizing dead space within the current building and the cost implications of renovating the police side, which is the most expensive component and needs to meet current specs. The timeline for completion could range from two to ten years. The relocation funds of $1.5 million and $2 million will need to be managed through communication with Chris Naibo and potentially the speaker's office.
