Brookfield Village Board Approves Cannabis Dispensary at 9500 Ogden Avenue
The Village Board voted to approve a special use permit for a cannabis dispensary at 9500 Ogden Avenue. The decision followed extensive public comment, with residents expressing both support and opposition. Board members discussed the zoning district, potential traffic impacts, and the project's alignment with the village's development plans for the Ogden Avenue corridor. Several residents raised concerns about the location's proximity to residential areas and youth-oriented destinations, while others highlighted the potential for increased tax revenue and economic development. The board clarified that the vote was based on the C2 zoning district of Ogden Avenue, which is intended for higher traffic and development, distinguishing it from previous rejections based on different zoning classifications or site configurations. The applicant also addressed concerns regarding security, signage, and building modifications. The final vote was 5-0 in favor.
Brookfield Approves Decreases in Lead Water Service Replacement Contracts
The Village Board approved three change orders for the 2020 and 2025 Lead Water Service Replacement projects, all resulting in decreases to the contract amount with FiveStar Energy Services LLC. These 'balancing change orders' are common at the end of projects and reflect actual costs versus initial estimates. The decreases occurred because the initial bids included a conservative 'cushion' for potential unforeseen issues, which were not fully utilized. The IEPA requires these balancing change orders to be executed. The first change order for Phase 1 (2020 project) resulted in a $33,485.25 decrease. The second change order for Phase 2 (2020 project) resulted in a $447,067 decrease. The third change order for Phase 3 (2025 project) resulted in a $223,329.95 decrease.
Brookfield Marks 50th Anniversary of Replica Liberty Bell
The Village Board celebrated the 50th anniversary of Brookfield's replica Liberty Bell. A proclamation was read acknowledging the bell's acquisition in 1976 as part of the nation's bicentennial observance, funded by a communitywide effort. The bell was cast by the same foundry as the original Liberty Bell. A rededication ceremony is scheduled for July 4th, 2026, coinciding with the nation's 250th anniversary of independence. The proclamation highlighted the bell's role as a symbol of patriotism and community spirit, commending the Brookfield Bicentennial Committee and all involved in making the tribute possible. Residents were encouraged to participate in the rededication.
