Water Treatment Plant Chemical Bids Approved

The City Council considered bids for chemicals needed for the Lake Murray and Riverside water treatment plants. The lowest responsive and responsible bidders were identified. The chemicals include alum (for the Columbia and Riverside plants), Univar for liquid fluoride (Lake Murray plant), JCI Jones for sodium hypochlorite (both facilities), liquid ammonium sulfate (Lake Murray plant), and Brenntag for sodium hydroxide (both facilities). The approval covers five different chemical items from four different suppliers. The item was approved unanimously.

Rezoning Approved for Lee Park Road Property

The City Council considered the second reading of a recommendation from the Planning Commission to rezone 2254 Lee Park Road. The property, identified by tax map number 004625-04-032, will be rezoned from residential R1 to general commercial C2. During discussion, a council member expressed a desire to improve the appearance of the intersection using available grants. The facade grant program was discussed, with clarification on its city-wide applicability for commercial properties and its matching grant structure (50% match up to a $10,000 maximum). The rezoning was approved unanimously.

Students Recognized for Pedestrian Safety Campaign

The 21st Century after-school students from the Brooklyn Lakeview Empowerment Center were recognized for their work on a pedestrian safety awareness campaign. They produced a public service announcement (PSA) to educate the public on the safe use of a new pedestrian crosswalk and rectangular rapid flashing beacon installed at the intersection of North 12th Street and Monticello Street. The PSA was promoted via social media to increase public safety awareness. The students involved were Haley Clark, Avery Daniels, Aiden Davis, Kamari Dickens, and Christina Favor. The project partners included the Active and Accessible Community Transit Coalition, the South Carolina Department of Transportation, and the South Carolina Department of Public Health. The crosswalk and beacon became operational in spring 2026.

Council Adjourns to Executive Session for Legal Advice on PFAS Lawsuit

The City Council moved to adjourn to executive session to receive legal advice regarding the PFAS class action lawsuit, pursuant to South Carolina Code Annotated 30-4-78-2. The motion to adjourn was made, seconded, and unanimously approved.
