Annual Events Resolution Approved; Funds from Fourth Fridays Support Hearing Aid Programs

The council considered and approved Resolution 1030, an annual resolution for events from July to December. Events include Fourth Fridays, Optimist Gourmet Burger Cook-Off, Porches of Sumter, Oktoberfest, Fall Feast, and Liberty Taste & Tour. The city does not generate revenue from these events; proceeds from specific events like Fourth Fridays go to organizations like the Sertoma Club for providing hearing aids to children and assistance for those with hearing issues via churches. One council member expressed opposition to events involving alcohol due to concerns about drunk driving, but the resolution passed 5-1.

City Accepts $2.6 Million SC Resiliency Grant for New Municipal Fueling Station

The city accepted a grant of $2,685,746 from the South Carolina Office of Resiliency for a municipal fueling station. The resolution accepts responsibility for the funds, project completion, any defects, and long-term maintenance and cost overruns. This grant will fund a second fueling facility, enhancing resiliency by providing an alternative fueling point during storm events or if the existing station is down. The new station will be located on Patriot Parkway. The existing station is on Calhoun Street.

Community Development Initiatives Highlighted: Tennis Success, Store Closures, New Farmers Market, and Youth Programs

Council members discussed various community matters. One member highlighted the success of the Palmetto Tennis Center's recent tournament and encouraged attendance. Another expressed concern over the impending closure of Big Lots and Save Lots, urging the city to encourage new businesses, particularly a grocery store, to occupy the vacant space due to its impact on residents who rely on these stores. The opening of a new farmers market on Manny Avenue and upcoming youth programs were also mentioned. The Mayor Pro Tem noted attendance at a business court ribbon cutting and a colleague's grandmother's homegoing service. The closure of Big Lots and Save Lots on July 12th is anticipated to be devastating for residents who walk to these stores for groceries, prompting a call for city action to attract a new food store to the area.

The award aims to enhance the player experience and support members and officials.

Weaver Subdivision Development Accepted, $83K Letter of Credit Secured for Infrastructure

The council accepted a Guarantee Deed of Dedication and a Letter of Credit for the Weaver Subdivision. The Letter of Credit is for $82,976 to cover potential deficiencies in sewer, road, and stormwater systems within the first two years of development. Water service for this subdivision is provided by the High Hills Water District, not the city. The city will provide sewer services and collect fees from High Hills for water. This action closes out the final piece of a development area signed years ago. The development is located off Stamey Road, before the recycling center.
