Churches Partner to Launch Youth Empowerment Program, Offer Life Skills Training
A presentation was given on the Youth Empowerment Program, a partnership between First Baptist and Second Baptist churches. This program offers more than just after-school activities, focusing on teaching life skills and preparing young people for their future, including practical skills like building houses. The partnership also involved First Baptist providing space for the Brothers and Sisters of Aken County program, which serves kids from first to twelfth grade, after their previous facility was no longer viable. The Youth Empowerment Program is hosted on the Second Baptist campus.
Aken City Council Declares July as Parks and Recreation Month
The Aken City Council officially designated July as Parks and Recreation Month with a proclamation. The proclamation highlighted the essential role of parks and recreation in enhancing the quality of life, promoting physical and mental well-being, encouraging active lifestyles, fostering connections with nature, and strengthening the local economy through increased property values, tourism, and business growth. It also noted the environmental benefits and resilience provided by green spaces. The proclamation was read by Councilwoman Lesie Price and signed by Mayor Teddy Milner.
2.35 Acres on Rudy Mason Parkway Recommended for Rezoning to General Business
The council heard the first reading of an ordinance to rezone 2.35 acres on Rudy Mason Parkway from residential single-family to general business. The comprehensive plan designates this property for commercial uses, and the rezoning would bring it into conformance with its future land use designation and its frontage on a major arterial roadway. The Planning Commission unanimously recommended the rezoning.
Budget Amended for Emergency Roof Replacement at Parks Operations Center
An ordinance was approved to amend the city's budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2025, to cover emergency roof replacement on the Parks Operations Center. The city received three quotes for the work due to a dire emergency situation caused by roof leakage. The chosen bid was from a local vendor who could perform the work immediately, representing the middle cost of the three quotes. The budget ordinance allows for a contingency, and work may have already begun due to the urgency.
Annexation and Planned Commercial Zoning Approved for 877 Doerty Road with Conditions
An ordinance for the annexation of approximately 3,400ths of an acre at 877 Doerty Road and its zoning as planned commercial (PC) with concept plan approval was presented for first reading. The property has been used for automotive-related businesses and the applicant proposes to operate a heating and air conditioning business in the existing building with minor site improvements. The Planning Commission unanimously recommended annexation and zoning PC with several conditions, including water/sewer service availability, monument signage, building repainting in earth tones, driveway upgrades, and submission of revised plans and agreements within 180 days.
