May Development, Code Enforcement, and Community Events Update

In May, Planning and Development issued 12 certificates of occupancy, 9 new business licenses, and 30 building permits. Code enforcement handled 48 overgrown vegetation cases, removed 24 signs from the right-of-way, and addressed 15 trash can cases and 3 property maintenance cases. There were 32 bulk waste violations. The department handled 50 direct citizen contacts. General Services removed 92 bags of litter, collected 131.32 tons of bulk and yard waste, and issued 35 bulk trash/yard waste violation tags. Upcoming events include a Father's Day Brunch on June 13th and a National Night Out Back to School Bash on July 31st, both at Liberty Park Community Center.

May Public Safety Report: Crime Stats, Training, Community Resources Highlighted

The police department responded to 4,074 calls in May, with 38 arrests and 12 cases opened by CID. Proactive patrols resulted in 42 stops, 16 citations, and 28 warnings, with three uninsured vehicles removed from the roadway and three arrests made. The CID arrested a subject for child exploitation. The canine unit conducted 77 traffic stops, leading to two arrests. Officers completed annual training, including weapons qualification and physical fitness tests. The fire department handled 119 calls (38 fire, 81 rescue/EMS) and conducted various training exercises, including hazardous material monitoring and aerial operations. A new fire engine is expected in about a month. Fire Marshal Donahue updated pre-plans, conducted inspections, and made business contacts. Two community resources were highlighted: Golden Harvest Food Bank's summer harvest food distribution on June 11th at Risen Church and the Columbia County Health Department's mobile unit providing services on the second Thursday of each month at 1040 John Street.

Chamberlain Road Properties Annexed and Rezoned to Residential

The City Council considered the second reading of ordinances to annex and rezone three properties located at 769 Chamberlain Road, 759 Chamberlain Road, and 0 Chamberlain Road. All three parcels, currently zoned RA Residential Agriculture by Columbia County, were rezoned to RC1 Residential. The council adopted the ordinances for annexation and rezoning for these properties.

Grovetown Police Department Hosts Annual Summer Camp for Youth

The police department conducted its annual summer camp for local youth at Liberty Park, marking approximately 30 years of the program. The camp provided activities, meals, and educational events for 50 local children. Major Eastman and the entire department were commended for their efforts in running the camp.

City Declares Surplus Truck for Parts Salvage

The council recommended the adoption of a resolution to declare a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado as surplus property. The vehicle requires an $8,500 transmission repair, which is deemed not cost-effective. The plan is to scrap the vehicle for usable parts and then take the remaining metal to a scrap yard. This process is expected to yield more value than selling the vehicle as is.
