City Approves Purchase of New Patrol Car with Enhanced Graphics
The council approved the purchase of a new Dodge Durango patrol car, with equipment, for an amount not to exceed $67,000. This purchase will be funded by a $30,000 grant and an additional $37,000 from the city's funds. The new vehicle will feature more visible graphics, moving away from the previous 'ghost' graphics, to enhance visibility and act as a better crime deterrent.
Planning and Zoning Approves Larson Parkway Project; Cahaba Lake Ordinance Discussion Continues
Councilmember Jackson provided an update on the Planning and Zoning Board's recent activities. The board approved the preliminary plan for the Larson Parkway project, which includes a grocery store. Several miscellaneous annexations and re-zonings were also approved. Discussion around the Cahaba Lake ordinance focused on setbacks, building lines, and the decision to post the most current versions of the ordinance online. The board is still analyzing public comments from a hearing where 25-30 citizens spoke, and many more have submitted emails. The Cahaba Lake ordinance is expected to be discussed at the July workshop, with potential votes in July or August. The board also decided to separate its workshop and regular meetings, holding workshops on the Thursday before the Monday meeting to allow for more research and review of technical details.
Veterans Committee Finalizes Plans for Inaugural 4th of July Parade
Councilmember Miller reported on the Veterans Committee, Acta, and the Historical Board. The Veterans Committee finalized plans for the first annual 4th of July parade to celebrate America's 250th anniversary, with the plan now with the mayor for approval. Acta and the Historical Board are between meetings. Councilmember Miller also expressed enjoyment of the separated Planning and Zoning meetings, finding the separation insightful.
Rugby Tournament This Saturday; Civic Center Roof Project Nears Completion; Fall Sports Registration Open
Councilmember Farr provided updates on several city departments. The IDA will meet this Thursday. The Parks and Recreation department is hosting a rugby tournament this Saturday at the soccer complex. For Senior Citizens, the district master games (55+) will be held in Trussville July 7th-9th, with state games in October. The roof seal project at the Civic Center is complete and undergoing inspection to extend its warranty for 10 years. Fall sports registrations are now open. Public Works is preparing for a merger between Parks and Rec and Public Works, dealing with storm damage, and maintaining fleet maintenance and pothole repair. Chamber of Commerce events include 'Business After Hours' at Spare Time on June 25th and 'Coffee and Contacts' at Walk-On's on June 30th. Library services include notary, test proctoring, printing, voter registration, room reservations, and comfortable spaces. Upcoming library events include a historian talk on June 25th and a dinosaur fossil presentation on July 1st.
Mayor Addresses Railroad Disruptions and Splash Pad Closure; Leadership Trussville Applications Open
Mayor provided updates on the railroad issues affecting Camp Coleman residents and the splash pad at the pool. Norfolk Southern has torn up the rail crossing in front of Camp Coleman without prior notification, causing frustration. The Mayor will address this with Norfolk Southern's executive leadership and will provide closure dates for crossings and detour information as it becomes available. The splash pad is temporarily closed due to a custom part being manufactured; it has shipped and will be installed as soon as possible, with refunds being issued to members who utilized the splash pad. The Mayor also congratulated the beautification award honorees and reminded residents about the Leadership Trussville Class 5 application deadline.
