Separately, Ordinance 3336, a conditional use approval for a manned donation drop box for Vapor Ministries, was also approved unanimously, with no conditions. Lastly, Ordinance 3337, a conditional use request for a dog grooming business on Green Valley Road (with no boarding), received unanimous approval with no conditions. The owner of the dog grooming business operates four other locations.

Vestavia Hills Police Department Earns Accreditation; Chief Ware Appointed to State Task Force

The city council recognized the Vestavia Hills Police Department for achieving accreditation through the Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police (AACOP). Chief Mark Jones of the Headland Alabama Police Department and a member of the AACOP Educational Committee presented the accreditation, highlighting the department's commitment to excellence, accountability, transparency, and service to the community. This accreditation is valid for five years and involves annual spot checks to ensure continued compliance with rigorous standards. Additionally, Chief Shane Ware was appointed by Governor Kay Ivey to the Alabama Crime Clearance Data Task Force, established by House Joint Resolution 34 to study declining crime clearance rates.

City Renews 10-Year Cable Franchise Agreement with Spectrum

Ordinance 3340, a renewal of the franchise agreement with Spectrum (Charter), was approved. This is a 10-year agreement for cable television services. The agreement has been updated to a modern form, including means of recourse for issues during construction. Spectrum typically builds into new subdivisions to provide services. The council also discussed and affirmed the requirement of a performance bond, similar to other franchise agreements, to protect the city should construction issues arise.

Advertisements for bids go out this week, with anticipated construction commencement in late September and a budget of $6.2 million. The pool heater installation is nearing completion, with a final walkthrough scheduled. Lastly, work on 'shack infrastructure' for a future police operations center and maintenance building is divided into three phases, with Phase One involving moving 30,000 cubic yards of dirt and currently in the bidding stage. The city has received preliminary positive feedback on its application to the Mine Reclamation office for grants related to this infrastructure.

Vestavia Hills Proclaims June as Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month
