Fire Department Submits FEMA Grants, Reports Call Volume and Upcoming Spray Park Opening
Fire Chief Conrad reported that the department responded to 58 calls in the last two weeks, totaling 653 calls for the year. He submitted two grants to FEMA: one for a battery-operated fan and equipment like gear, boots, and radios for the next budget year, and another for a smokehouse trailer submitted by the deputy chief. The Chief also mentioned that the spray park is expected to open the following week due to anticipated hot weather. He highlighted the value of a recent grant writing course he attended, which provided tips for future grant applications.
Traffic Flow and Construction Zone Issues Addressed by City Council
Multiple issues regarding traffic flow and road construction were discussed. A business owner reported a dump truck blocking her entrance during peak hours, which the city manager addressed by speaking with construction staff and the affected business owner. Council members acknowledged the prompt response and follow-up. The difficulty of navigating construction zones, particularly the shifting of lanes and cones, was highlighted, with an emphasis on clear communication to motorists about expected delays and conditions. An issue at 10 Mile and Griswold was raised concerning parking limitations due to truck turning radii and sensor sensitivity for traffic lights, potentially causing traffic backups. The city manager will raise these concerns with the relevant teams.
Community Events, AI Glasses for Veterans, and Local Recognition Highlighted
Council Member Curtzwell provided several community updates. She reminded residents about the upcoming Lake Street Cruisin' event on Wednesday, June 24th, at 6:30 PM, thanking sponsors Lion Homescape and Performance Creative Resources. She also shared information about Meta's donation of Ray Ban Meta AI glasses to legally blind veterans through the Blinded Veterans Association, detailing the glasses' capabilities for reading, identification, and navigation. Finally, she recognized Karen Naggie for receiving first prize in 'Cottage Homes' magazine for her decorated home and her design work at the Salem South Lyon Library.
New Sergeant Joins South Lyon Police Department, Discusses Recruitment Challenges
The Police Chief reported that the department is actively recruiting one officer and has visited the Oakland Police Academy twice. He introduced Sergeant Scott Manor, a new hire, highlighting his apprehension of individuals in a stolen vehicle on June 8th. Sergeant Manor shared his background, having retired as Chief from Howell Police Department after 29 years, and his recent work with Metro Park. He discussed the ongoing challenges of recruitment and retention in law enforcement nationwide, noting that while he doesn't have direct experience with AI in policing, he believes human presence is crucial for community safety. He also mentioned the value of drone technology and body cameras for officer protection.
Support for Local Businesses and Community Involvement Emphasized
Council Member Hansen wished everyone a belated Father's Day and gave a shout-out to the American Dance Academy for their summer day camp program. He encouraged residents to support local businesses, including those affected by construction along Pontiac Trail, and to patronize restaurants and stores. He noted positive comments from residents about the smooth flow of major construction projects and commended the city staff involved. Council Member Dilk thanked Mike Gutenk for joining the DDA board, encouraging more citizen involvement.
