Bid Awarded for Telephone Road Water Well Replacement Project
The council awarded a bid to Lyman Well Company for the Telephone Road water well replacement project. The bid amount was $1,198,000, which is within the project budget. Funding will come from water and sewer funds. The city received only one bid because there are few companies capable of undertaking large water well projects of this nature, and Lyman Well Company is known for this type of work and has a history with the city. The council approved the resolution.
Council Encourages Citizen Feedback and Addresses Meeting Conduct
During the mayor and council items, Councilwoman Brandon encouraged citizens to continue providing feedback, both positive and negative, to the council, emphasizing that this input is crucial for identifying issues and acknowledging successes. Councilman Fornette addressed public criticism regarding his use of a phone during meetings, explaining it's for research related to blighted properties and city matters, not for personal use. He also commented on annexation concerns, stating his focus is on Highway 90 and potential support from Chevron. Other council members acknowledged the helpfulness of presentation aids and reiterated their commitment to taking citizen feedback seriously.
Fire Department Reports on Staffing, Training, Equipment, and Community Engagement
Fire Chief presented an update on the fire department's operations, personnel, and equipment. The department has 60 employees, including administration staff who are EMTs, with three shifts of 18 employees each. Key personnel include a Battalion Chief, three Captains (stationed at Bike, Lake Avenue, and Central stations), six Lieutenants (responsible for driving and pumping trucks), and firefighters for fire suppression and medical aid. The training chief, Justin Butler, has implemented regular medical and tactical training, including active shooter response drills in partnership with the Mississippi Department of Homeland Security. The department utilizes a training building (old Singer River radiator) for these exercises. They also run programs like 'Fire Cubs' for children and a successful 'haunted house' that serves an educational purpose about fire safety. The department responded to 217 fire-related calls and 887 rescue calls year-to-date, averaging about 3,000 calls annually. Recent equipment updates include new bay doors and the rebuilding of a 1965 Mack truck into a parade truck. A new fire truck is expected by December, and future plans include a ladder truck purchase. The department is actively seeking grants, recently acquiring a 'Suds and Rents' decon washdown system to combat cancer risks among firefighters and is pursuing grants for a second set of turnout gear. A new training tower is under construction to improve fire rating points, with a goal to move from a Class 4 to a Class 3 rating.
Advocate Urges Council to Ban All Kratom Products Amidst Continued Sales in Nearby City
Desma Davis, founder and president of Quitting Support, spoke to the council regarding the continued sale of kratom-derived products in Moss Point, despite Mississippi's ban on these substances. She highlighted that these products, often marketed with appealing flavors and packaging, are referred to as 'gas station heroin' and contribute to addiction and fatalities. Davis urged the council to support efforts to ban all forms of kratom in Mississippi, emphasizing that manufacturers will continue to create new compounds to circumvent regulations as long as kratom remains legal. She noted that plain leaf kratom is the source material for these potent products and that continuing leadership in this area is crucial for stronger protections.
Water Line Improvements Approved for Singan River Street and Adjacent Areas
The council approved a professional services agreement with Neil Schaefer for the design and oversight of water line improvement projects on Singan River Street and three adjacent streets (Anola, Altama, Artemis). This project addresses citizen complaints about water quality. The existing Singan River line is a dead end, and a temporary fix involved flushing the line twice daily. The project will replace the lines on Singan River and the three dead-end streets, and connect the Singan River line to Wood Haven to create a continuous flow (a 'U' shape) and eliminate the dead end. The project will be funded through water and sewer funds. Councilman Fornette noted this project has been needed for years.
