Ocean Springs Aldermen Approve Parking Garage Lease Agreement Amidst Ownership and Funding Concerns

The City of Ocean Springs Aldermen discussed and ultimately approved a lease agreement between the city and OHOS Development LLC for parking spaces at 1515 Government Street. The lease agreement is a requirement to satisfy grant obligations related to the parking garage's construction, which was funded by approximately $8 million in grant funding from the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA). Concerns were raised by some Aldermen and citizens regarding ownership of the garage, the legality of previous agreements, and the potential financial risks if the city does not enter into the lease, including the possibility of repaying grant funds. The Mayor and other Aldermen argued that leasing the garage is the most financially responsible option, as it avoids significant long-term ownership costs and liabilities, preserves property tax revenue, and maintains a positive relationship with state funding partners like the MDA.
