City Manager Reports on Project Progress, Paving Delays, and Fireworks Logistics

The City Manager provided updates on several ongoing projects. The canal dredging project is on schedule with an end date of October 24th, requiring contractors to meet the deadline despite potential delays from weather. The paving project is significantly impacted by rain, with two streets in Diamond Head currently torn up; an extension to the contract's end date of July 15th is requested due to weather delays. Progress on the Jordan River Boardwalk and Monjoy Creek Nature Trails is good, with contractors installing pilings and materials on site, though weather and high tides have caused some muddy conditions. An MDOT project has experienced unexpected ramp closures, and the city is requesting better notification procedures. The Pelican Cove project has finalized plans and specifications, with advertisement expected soon. Public safety vehicles will have clear access during the upcoming fireworks event, and parking logistics have been arranged to accommodate attendees, including golf carts and handicap parking, with additional parking available across from the football field on private property.

City Council Reviews Calapona Tributary Bank Stabilization and Duck Pond Improvements

The City Council reviewed and discussed proposed improvements for the Calapona tributary bank stabilization and the duck pond. The project aims to address severe erosion and bank destabilization threatening nearby residential homes by regrading the existing ditch with proper side slopes and installing bank protection such as fleximat or tide concrete blocking. Additionally, the duck pond will be improved to detain water during storm events, reducing outflow by 62%. The project requires six easements out of twenty residences and involves modifying the pond's size and lowering its water surface elevation to accommodate increased storage while maintaining a visually appealing, mowable lawn-like appearance around the pond. An aeration device will also be installed in the pond. The presentation was given by Nathan Long from Covington Civil and Environmental.
