Police Department Reports Increased Complaints and Crashes, Enhances Jubilee Day Safety Measures
The Chief of Police reported a substantial increase in complaints handled compared to the previous year, with 1179 complaints in May compared to 787 in the prior May. Two new officers are performing well. The department is preparing for Jubilee Day with enhanced safety measures, including heavier vehicles blocking certain areas and concrete barriers on sidewalks to prevent vehicles from driving onto them. The department is also increasing traffic enforcement through various grants. The new handheld law has not significantly changed enforcement practices as similar stops were already possible under other sections of the law. The department is looking into newer speed timing devices and has addressed Vascar unit calibration. The police academy graduation for two new officers is scheduled for June 26th, with them entering the FTO program in July. The number of traffic crashes is also up, which is puzzling to the Chief.
