June 08, 2026 - Regular June Board Meeting
Published: Jun 8, 2026
Personnel Appointments and Technology Renewal Approved; Playground Equipment Quote Confirmed
The board approved the personnel report, which included recommendations for certified staff, certified resignations, ECA recommendations, and summer school recommendations. Specific introductions were made for new high school staff: Mark McFarland and Kevin Sailor as teachers, and Will Balden as Dean of Students. David Banick was introduced as a new special education resource teacher at Weston. The board also approved the renewal of the SIPA compliant web filter with Linewise, which is necessary for receiving federal dollars through the -ate program and includes features to comply with new state laws regarding internet access on take-home devices. The approval of the quote from Clay Pros for the Westland playground equipment was also confirmed.
Board Approves Four Policies; Holds First Reading for Four Additional Policies
The board approved four board policies presented last month, which are based on changes in legislation from their partners at Church Church on Nantrum. The policies include A200 (Firearms, Weapons, and Destructive Devices), A275 (School Wellness), A300 (Responsible Use of Technology and Internet Use Policy), and A301 (Wireless Communication Device Policy). The board also held a first reading for several other policies: C1175 (Student Attendance, Academic Engagement, and Truancy Prevention), C525 (Medical Needs at School), F101 (Budget Adoption and Implementation), and F125 (Purchasing Procedures and Capital Assets). These policies are intended to be brought back for a second reading next month.
Fourth Grade Chicago Field Trip Approved; Assessment and E-Learning Updates Provided
The board approved a request for a new out-of-state field trip for fourth-grade students from JB Stevens to Chicago. This trip, which is new for Greenfield Central, is supported by the fourth-grade teachers and Miss Sutton. While it requires early morning departure and late return, the educational benefits are recognized, and it will serve as a pilot program. Families will have opportunities for fundraising to support the trip. The board also approved the instruction report, which included updates on student assessments. Second and third graders showed improvement on the I Read assessment, with many students passing on their second attempt. Fourth and sixth-grade science results for the iLearn assessment are trending above state averages. The district will reduce e-learning days from three to two for the upcoming school year. A new universal math screener, I Ready Inform, will be implemented for K-2 students.
Meal Prices Increase by 10 Cents; Grants and Donations Approved
The board approved the meal pricing for the 2026-2027 school year, recommending a 10-cent increase per meal. This increase aligns with federal minimums for paid lunch equity and will help maintain the health of the food service fund, especially given rising food costs. The director of food services managed the program effectively, ending the year slightly under budget. Summer meal programs will continue. The board also approved grants and donations, including $875 from an anonymous donor for snow cones at Harris Elementary, a bounce house rental from Giant Slayer for Harris Elementary's field day, and $1,000 from the National Guard for the GC radio and TV program at Greenfield Central High School.
2027 Commencement Date Set for June 5th; Discussion on Future Venue
The school board approved a recommendation for the 2027 commencement date, setting it for Saturday, June 5th. This date was chosen to align with tradition by not holding the ceremony on Memorial Day weekend, and to accommodate the last day of school, which falls on the Friday before Memorial Day. There were discussions about the possibility of holding future commencements on the football field, a request that has been made by several community members. The current year's commencement was held in the gymnasium with air conditioning, and overflow attendees watched on large monitors in the hallway from the auditorium.
