Urban Forestry Grant to Fund Tree Planting; GIS System Transition Underway

Adam Reed, Planning Director, provided updates on two major projects. An urban forestry grant funds a tree inventory and maintenance plan for publicly owned trees and will support planting at least 100 native trees through community sign-ups and volunteer planting days. The city is transitioning its GIS system to Schneider Geospatial's 'Beacon' platform, which will improve public access to data, forms, and dashboards. This transition will streamline data management for departments like Wastewater. Additionally, there are five active single-family home neighborhoods, two multi-family developments nearing completion (837 Lofts and DJM Investments property), and ongoing support for developers applying for grants and tax credits.

Citizens Urge Council to Impose Moratorium on Data Center Development

Connie Lindsey and Lorraine White, representing a group of citizens, requested the City Council to implement a moratorium on data center development. They highlighted that several other counties and the city of Indianapolis have enacted similar pauses or bans due to concerns about environmental impact, utility rates, resource consumption, and property values. White Legal Services provided a legal basis for zoning to protect public welfare and aesthetics, referencing Supreme Court cases and the city's Comprehensive Plan. They proposed forming a committee to study data center ordinances.

Public Comment Includes Call for Mayor's Resignation and Data Center Development Inquiry

During public comment, Jason Coffee demanded the Mayor's resignation, citing negative national news coverage. Linda Sperling seconded the motion. Connie Lindsey questioned council members about signing Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) related to data centers, which all denied. She also inquired if any data center developers had approached the city or council, to which the response was negative.
