Residents Voice Concerns Over Baldwin Park Conditions and John Street Field Access

Several residents spoke during the public comment period regarding issues at Baldwin Park, specifically concerning the condition of the pickleball and tennis courts, and the management of an open field on John Street in South Merrick. Residents expressed concerns about unsafe playing conditions on the pickleball courts due to cracks and sticky tar patches, the need for permanent nets, and the lack of proper maintenance. They also raised issues about the closure of the John Street field, which was previously used as an unofficial dog park, citing the inconvenience and the negative impact on community building. The town board acknowledged these concerns, stating that improvements are being made across town parks and that the $700,000 cost for completely re-paving the Baldwin Park courts is being considered for the capital plan for the next year. They committed to making the park safe and addressing immediate issues like the sticky tar and damaged nets.

Town Board Approves Spark Car Wash Special Exception, Reviews Parking and Traffic Regulations

The Town Board heard a public hearing for a proposed local law regarding regulations and restrictions to limit parking in West Hempstead, and approved a local law regarding parking or standing prohibitions in East Meadow, near East Rockaway, Seaford, and West Hempstead, and a local law regarding traffic regulations in the vicinity of schools in West Hempstead. The board also heard the application of Spark Car Wash LLC for a special exception to develop and operate a car wash in East Meadow. The application includes a 4,920 square foot car wash, two queuing lanes, landscaping improvements, a flagpole, a sound attenuation wall, and 20 parking and vacuum stalls. The applicant's representative, Keith Brown, stated the property is zoned in the business X district and has been vacant since at least September of 2007. The project satisfies all criteria for a special exception, with the only potential variance sought for signage. The board approved the application for Spark Car Wash.

Residents Criticize Animal Shelter Staffing and Operations; Board Responds to Concerns

During the public comment period, multiple residents expressed significant concerns regarding the operations and staffing at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. Speakers detailed issues such as chronic understaffing, particularly in kennel positions, leading to burnout among existing staff and volunteers. They highlighted the lack of communication and support from the town board towards the shelter's needs, the struggle to address dangerous animals, and the prolonged holding periods for animals like Lance and Ziggy. Specifics were raised about the reduction in kennel supervisors and directors since 2019, the risk to staff and volunteers from animal bites, and the apparent lack of action despite repeated concerns voiced over several years. Residents questioned the allocation of funds, particularly a $63/hour consultant, suggesting these resources could be better used for hiring experienced staff or directly caring for animals. The town board and town attorney responded by stating they are in constant communication with shelter leadership, are actively working to find suitable rescues for Lance and Ziggy, and prioritize safety and a clean environment. They acknowledged the difficulty in finding appropriate placements for animals with severe behavioral issues and bite histories, emphasizing that humane euthanasia is a last resort, and that vetting rescues takes time.
