Findlay Fire Department Reports 57 Overlapping Calls in May; Response Protocols Clarified

The Findlay Fire Department's May 2026 activities report was presented. Councilmember Coleman noted 57 overlapping calls, expressing concern about response capabilities during simultaneous emergencies. Fire Chief Martin clarified that 'overlapping calls' means multiple calls occurred concurrently, not that all resources were depleted, and that sufficient stations were available without needing mutual aid. Mayor Mearin and Councilmember Phillips added that mutual aid is rarely needed due to departmental training and staging protocols. The report was filed.

Pool's Free Admission Days Effectiveness Discussed; Local News Coverage Noted

Councilmember Wagner inquired about the pool's recent operation, specifically regarding free admission days during hot weather and their effectiveness. Mayor Mearin stated he would obtain specific statistics but noted the initiative was intended to make the pool a great, safe community asset. He also mentioned a local news story featuring the pool and a humorous blooper involving a child making dolphin noises, which he found delightful. The free admission initiative was part of efforts to provide enjoyable community activities.

City Council Debates Ordinance 2026-76 Amidst Auditor's Concerns

Council discussed Ordinance 2026-76, a TIF development related to Casto development. Councilmember Preston expressed concerns about the draft legislation, noting errors and the need for statutory review by bond counsel and the group that wrote it. He requested the ordinance be held until the next meeting for IRS and state compliance. Councilmember Preston countered, stating the issue has been with the Finance Committee since January and that delaying it might help the auditor provide opinions. Auditor Stacy Shock defended her diligence, citing a lack of proper information and recent document revisions, and stated her role is to review and ensure compliance. Mayor Mearin indicated the auditor had been included in correspondence since December 3rd, 2025, and that the document was recently revised based on auditor feedback. The auditor disputed the mayor's timeline and inferences, asserting her role is fiscal review and that documents have had changes due to her input. Councilman DeLong expressed discomfort, stating the agenda materials were received late and he had insufficient time to review them. Mayor Mearin clarified that adding it to the agenda allowed for public and council feedback, and that a vote was not being taken that night. Councilman Phillips noted prior discussions in committee dating back to February and April. The auditor reiterated that her role is not negotiation but fiscal review, and that proper process ensures complete legislation for the community. Ultimately, the motion to add the ordinance passed 6 to 1.
