Perrysburg Residents and Officers Honored for Heroic Actions; Police Division Receives High Marks
The Safety Council of Northwest Ohio recognized several Perrysburg residents for their heroic actions. Matt Ziegler from the service department was honored for preventing an unconscious driver from entering traffic. Officers John Groden and Stephen Laura were recognized for evacuating residents and extinguishing a fire at Perry's Crossing. Former Mayor Mike Olmsted received a Good Samaritan award for administering the Heimlich maneuver and CPR to a choking victim. The police division also received positive feedback from the Ohio Collaborative's review of its policies and operations, passing all 14 standards.
Audubon Islands Project Update: Habitat Restoration and Environmental Improvements Detailed
Zuri Carter, Chief Natural Resources Officer for Metro Parks Toledo, presented an update on the Audubon Islands project. The project, which began as a $3.6 million initiative and increased to $3.9 million, aims to address beneficial use impairments by improving habitat and water quality within the Maumee Area of Concern (AOC). Key goals include enhancing fish and benthos habitat, crucial for the region's walleye season and economic driver. The project involved restoring historical farming land, addressing invasive species, and combating erosion that has led to a loss of approximately 30 acres of land since 1940. Implementations included rock barrier reefs, engineered log jams, and planting various species. The project faced permitting delays, pushing the completion to 2026, with five years of post-project mitigation and invasive species management planned. Access to the island is restricted to management and researchers, not the public.
City Finance Department Receives Excellent Audit Rating; Insurance Renewal and Budget Amendments Discussed
The Finance Committee reported that the city's finance team received an 'Excellent' rating on their audit. The committee also approved the renewal of the city's property and liability insurance with Ohio Plan Risk Management for $291,516, an increase of $20,000 from last year, which includes coverage for two new medic units. Ms. Rathburn presented the 2027 estimate of revenues and discussed 2026 budget amendments, including a $10,000 transfer for the pool, police station flood repairs (reimbursed by insurance), office space leases, and water/sewer adjustments. An ordinance amendment was proposed to reference state ORC bidding thresholds instead of specific dollar amounts for public improvement projects. The committee also addressed expenditures over $5,000 and discussed compelling 'visit Perrysburg' to attend finance meetings due to their significant taxpayer funding.
Historical Farming Operations on Audubon Island Recounted
Kim Halt read a letter from Jim Alt Sr. detailing the history of farming on Audubon Island (also known as Ewing Island) from 1959 to 1988. The Alt and Eckle families farmed approximately 120 acres, using a World War II Army duck and later custom-built barges to transport machinery and grain. The letter highlighted the challenges of farming on the island, including weather, equipment failures, and logistical hurdles in transporting goods across the Maumee River. It also touched upon the wildlife present on the island and various anecdotes from their farming years, emphasizing the family-oriented nature of the operation.
Perrysburg Street Tree Commission Reports on Tree City USA Status and Urban Forestry Initiatives
Callie Sawaya, representing the Street Tree Commission of the City of Perrysburg, presented the annual review. Perrysburg has maintained its Tree City USA designation for 43 out of 50 years since the program's inception in 1976. The commission highlighted its adherence to the four core standards: maintaining a tree board, enacting a community tree ordinance, investing in urban forestry ($2 per capita), and hosting an Arbor Day observance. The commission has also earned the Growth Award for many years, demonstrating continuous improvement in urban forestry practices. Recent initiatives include upgrading tree tracker data into the City GIS, receiving a hook lift truck for urban forestry operations, and continuing public outreach, particularly concerning downtown tree removals and stormwater runoff education.
