Public Works Updates on Drainage Replacement, Water Plant Delays, and Parks Project Coordination
Public Works Engineer Damon Johnson reported on the ongoing replacement of an undersized and deteriorated drainage structure on Hawkins, involving the construction of a new box culvert. The street department also removed the boat dock, with plans to reinstall it before July 4th, weather permitting. Delays on the intake work within the coffer dam are attributed to fluctuating river levels caused by heavy rain, resulting in an estimated month-long loss of work. The water plant construction is otherwise on schedule, with demolition of older components planned as new structures are built. The parks project is progressing well, but overhead power lines feeding the intake need to be moved underground sooner than planned to avoid delaying the splash pad construction, incurring additional costs. He also discussed training sessions, including participation in explosive breach data gathering and tactical training for everyday scenarios. The Chief reported ongoing vandalism at the soccer complex, where garbage cans and benches have been damaged, and mentioned plans to install a new camera system. Additionally, he informed the council about the need to build a physical cage within the evidence room to further separate certain types of evidence, citing procedural requirements and the desire to prevent items from being easily removed. A motion was approved to purchase four 85-inch TV monitors for the community center from Sam's Club for $3,057.20 and wall mounts from Walmart for $110, with the total cost of $3,167.20 to be taken from the perpetual fund. This purchase aims to address issues with the community center's aging AV system. Additionally, the council noted items sold at auction on May 29th, including treadmills, ellipticals, grinders, and a truck. The heating element of the community center's therapeutic pool, which is 10 years old, needs replacement, and bids are being gathered, which will cause the pool to be temporarily closed. The perpetual fund was established to cover such maintenance and replacement costs. [cite: 236-273]
