Zensville Pathways Committee Proposes New Connections and Safety Improvements
The Zensville Pathways Committee presented their yearly progress and recommendations for improving the town's pathways network. Highlights included the completion of pathways on 146th Street, 116th Street, and Oak Street. Upcoming projects include a connection on Michigan Road, which is receiving TIF funding and is expected to begin construction this summer. The committee also collaborated with the firm Health by Design for a Safe Routes to School study, which identified several recommendations for improving pedestrian and cyclist safety around local schools. Four specific recommendations for new pathway connections were presented: adding an access point to the Big Four Rail Trail from Oak Street, completing a 1,400 ft segment on Templan Road, finishing a 300 ft segment on Audinger Drive, and connecting a 650 ft segment in the Cedar Bin subdivision off Pleasant View Road. Two safety recommendations were also made: adding rumble strips or similar alerts at the Malberry Street and Ford Road roundabout as a short-term measure, and exploring surface-mount safety improvements like physical separation for pedestrians and cyclists at three locations near Pleasant View Road. The committee noted that these recommendations are timed to align with the budget season for consideration in the 2027 fiscal year.
Council Approves $4 Million Appropriation for Ready 2.0 Program's Southern Portion
The Town Council considered a resolution regarding the appropriation of additional funds for the Ready 2.0 program. This program initially provided $4 million for road improvements in the downtown area. Due to the council's decision not to proceed with traffic code changes for the northern portion of the project (specifically concerning one-way streets on First and Second Streets), the $4 million appropriation will be used to advance the southern or roundabout portion of the project. This ensures that the allocated funds can be utilized within the grant parameters and reimbursed. The council also discussed the importance of pedestrian design, aesthetics, and gateway signage for the project, with assurances that these elements will be refined and potentially include features like raised crosswalks. A final design for aesthetics and pedestrian facilities is expected to be developed, though a specific vote on the final design may not occur.
