Speedway Proclaims 2026 as Centennial Year
The Speedway Town Council approved a proclamation recognizing 2026 as the centennial year for the town of Speedway, Indiana, marking 100 years since its incorporation in 1926. The proclamation highlights Speedway's history, its association with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and its growth into a thriving community. The town plans to promote this milestone through its social media and website.
Town Council Approves Purchase of Replacement Police Vehicle
The Speedway Town Council approved the purchase of a replacement police vehicle from John Jones Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Corydon for $43,856.50. Although John Jones's quote was approximately $490 higher than the next lowest bid, they were the only vendor able to provide a vehicle within 30 days, meeting the town's urgent need. The other vendors had estimated delivery times of 90 to 180 days. The replacement cost will be covered by insurance.
Council Approves Claims, Adjustments, and Discusses Stormwater Fee Billing Changes
The Speedway Town Council approved claims and utility adjustments for the period of June 4th to June 17th, 2026. This included two ACH vendors totaling $21,126.10 and a main docket of $2,527,845.53 spanning 14 pages. Additionally, adjustments were made to five customer accounts. Council also discussed an update on the implementation of fee increases, noting a hiccup with stormwater fees being applied per parcel rather than per utility customer, leading some customers to receive bills for the first time. To streamline this, a segment of customers will be moved to a semi-annual billing cycle starting in December, with a notice included in their current bills.
Ordinance Approves 2026 Compensation Schedule with New Part-Time Position
The Speedway Town Council voted to approve Ordinance 1428 on its second reading, which amends ordinances 1419 and 1425 to establish jobs, salaries, wages, and compensation for the year 2026. The primary change is the addition of one part-time position to the Clerk Treasurer's office to allow for an overlap with a retiring accountant, facilitating knowledge transfer. This ensures all existing positions remain filled during the transition.
NASCAR Hauler Parade Approved for Brickyard 400
The Speedway Town Council approved a special event request for the Brickyard 400 NASCAR Hauler Parade. The event, organized by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), will feature NASCAR haulers parading down Main Street, offering fans an up-close look and aiming to drive traffic to local businesses. IMS will provide necessary facilities like restrooms and handwashing stations, and will add a medical tent. The council also waived associated fees for the event. The parade is scheduled to include a show car and will be led by a pace vehicle.
