The Select Board approved a Common Victualer license for Ron's Gourmet Ice Cream to operate at 305 Washington Street, formerly occupied by Juicy Greens. The establishment will offer ice cream, sundaes, frappes, and specialty drinks with approximately 20 seats. Operating hours will be Sunday through Saturday, noon to 10:00 p.m. The approval is pending the issuance of a food permit and final public safety inspections. The owner, who has 25 years of experience in the food industry, expressed enthusiasm for expanding to Westwood and supporting local school-aged sports teams.
Westwood Approves Historic Conservation Restriction Protecting Over 1,100 Acres
The Select Board voted to approve the conservation restriction for over 1,100 acres of land owned by Hale Education and The Trustees of Reservations. This restriction permanently protects the land from development, ensuring its conservation for public access and environmental benefits such as habitat preservation and carbon sequestration. The agreement involves over 972 acres in Westwood and an additional 137 acres in Dover. Hale Education will continue to own and operate the land within defined primary program areas, totaling under 220 acres, which allows for future growth while preserving key resources. The approval is a culmination of years of work by various stakeholders, including Westwood residents, conservation commissions, and the Trustees.
Roche Brothers Supermarkets Approved for All-Alcohol License in Westwood
Roche Bros. Supermarkets received approval for an all-alcohol Section 15 off-premises license at 338 Washington Street. This expands their existing beer and wine sales to include spirits, consistent with newly adopted regulations for retail stores over 20,000 sq ft. The proposed alcohol sales area will be 1,026 sq ft, a slight increase from their current beer and wine area. Store hours remain unchanged, and alcohol sales hours will also be consistent with current offerings. The Alcohol Review Committee unanimously recommended approval, pending final state and safety inspections. Roche Bros. highlighted their long history in Westwood, commitment to responsible alcohol sales, and plans to offer more customer choices.
Westwood Select Board Reviews Draft Value Statement for Town Governance
The Westwood Select Board reviewed a draft of the Westwood Value Statement, a one-page document summarizing the town's core values. The statement includes topics such as inclusive community, financial stability, quality public services, environmental quality, climate resilience, and community-driven planning. The board agreed to send the draft to town chairs and department heads for feedback before a final adoption meeting in July. Connor Reed, the Town Administrator, noted that performance goals for his role would be set by the end of July, aligning with the finalization of the value statement.
Westwood Select Board Forms Committee to Recruit New Town Council
The Westwood Select Board addressed the town council recruitment process, proposing a screening committee to select a new town council. The committee would include representatives from the Select Board, town administration, planning board, and residents with legal and municipal government experience. Suggestions for resident members included Lou Rizoli, former chair of the last committee and house counsel, and Jim O'Sullivan, the current moderator and practicing attorney. The board appointed Aaron Sibley as the Select Board representative to the committee and moved to adopt the proposed committee membership, pending confirmation from the planning board and agreement from potential resident members.
