Police Equipment Funding Approved, Traffic Camera Bill Receives No Action
The Public Safety and Transportation Committee met on June 3rd. They approved semiannual public auto inspections (vote count not specified). They voted 'no action necessary' on endorsing a Massachusetts legislature bill to authorize traffic cameras. The committee approved appropriations for police firearm equipment replacement ($225,000) and for supporting the police department ($105,000), both with unanimous votes from the present members.
City Council Declares Support for LGBTQIA+ Community
The Programs and Services Committee met on June 3rd and approved a resolution declaring the city of Newton's support for its transgender, gender diverse, and LGBTQIA plus community by a vote of 7-0. All other items before the committee were held.
City Approves Funding for Increased Water and Sewer Usage
During the second call of business, the council discussed item 203-26, a transfer of $100,000 for increased water and sewer usage. The item was approved through both Public Facilities and Finance committees. Clarifications were provided regarding irrigation meters for city and school buildings, confirming they are excluded from certain provisions. The item was approved by a 20-0 vote with four absent councilors.
City Approves Funds for Heat Pumps, Paving, Water Mains, and Snow Vehicles
The Public Facilities Committee met on June 3rd and approved several items related to infrastructure improvements. These include transferring funds for heat pumps at Fire Station 2, appropriations for a transportation and paving improvement program, water main improvements, acceptance of a low-interest loan, an appropriation for a fuel station, and an appropriation for snow vehicles. They also authorized a potential lease for solar energy generation at Burr Elementary School. The Finance Committee also reviewed and approved many of these same items, with some slight variations in vote counts.
Neighborhood Committee Appointments and Dormer Permits Approved by Land Use and Zoning Committees
The Land Use Committee met on June 2nd and approved several appointments to the Riverside Neighborhood Liaison Committee and the Newton Welsley Hospital Neighborhood Area Council. They also approved requests for dimensional relief for a dormer at 464 Dudley Road and an amendment to a special permit for a dormer at 392 Cherry Street, Unit 4. All votes were unanimous, with one exception of 6-1 for a reappointment. The Zoning and Planning Committee met on June 8th and reported on an ordinance change to chapter 30, allowing raised beds in front and rear setbacks under certain conditions, which requires 16 affirmative votes.
