Jeffrey Lucas Appointed to Belmont Light Board Following Candidate Discussion
The Belmont Light Board discussed the vacancy for the municipal light board. After reviewing 13 candidates, four were initially recommended. However, one candidate, Emily Wong, was disqualified due to not being a U.S. citizen. The board then narrowed down the candidates to Mike Bufano, Christian Blum, and Jeffrey Lucas. The discussion focused on the candidates' expertise, particularly in finance and energy, and the board ultimately nominated and voted to appoint Jeffrey Lucas to fill the vacancy until the April election.
Human Rights Commission Charge Amended to Include Non-Resident Members; Janina Majerian Reappointed
The Select Board amended the charge of the Human Rights Commission to allow individuals who work or are otherwise affiliated with Belmont, not just residents, to be members. This change was made to accommodate a candidate who works at the library but does not reside in Belmont. The board also reappointed Janina Majerian to the Human Rights Commission for a three-year term ending June 30, 2029.
Select Board Authorizes Chair to Sign POST Certification Form for Police Chief
The Select Board voted to authorize the Chair to sign an attestation form for the Chief of Police regarding certification by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST C). This is a required document as the Chief is from New Hampshire.
Traffic Calming and Road Improvement Recommendations Presented for Beach Street, Concord Avenue, and Grove Street
The Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) presented recommendations for traffic calming measures along the Beach Street corridor and Concord Avenue. These recommendations include a new stop sign at Orchard and Beach, a speed table with a raised crosswalk at Frostwalk, and a rapid flash beacon with a curb extension at the Senior Council on Aging Community Center. For Concord Avenue, improvements include sidewalk crossings at the Post Office, Library, Louis Easem, and Underwood, with specific designs like a raised speed table with rapid flash beacons at the Library and Underwood, and an offset crosswalk at the Post Office to improve visibility and safety. The TAC also presented the Grove Street corridor redesign proposal, which includes traffic signal, geometry changes, multimodal accommodations, and parking adjustments, estimated to cost between $4.1-4.2 million.
Board of Assessors Appointments: Mark Blillow Reappointed, Roy Epstein Appointed
The Select Board reappointed Mark Blillow to the Board of Assessors for a term ending June 30, 2029. They also appointed Roy Epstein to the Board of Assessors for a one-year term ending June 30, 2027. Both individuals were supported by the board members.
