City Authorizes LED Street Light Conversion for Enhanced Safety and Visibility

The city has authorized Centerpoint to convert street lights from high-pressure sodium and metal halide to LED. This conversion aligns with the commitment to safer streets by improving driver visibility. The project is expected to begin in the summer and take approximately two months. LED lights offer improved directional control and are more nimble compared to current lighting technology. This initiative is part of a broader trend for cities to adopt LED lighting.

City Achieves Lowest Vacancy Rate; Enhances Staffing in Public Safety and Project Management

The city has achieved its lowest staff vacancy rate in single digits since July 2024, with the rate being even lower in January 2026. To support project management, a new Capital Improvement Program Manager position has been created to focus on the development and implementation of capital projects, ensuring they are delivered effectively. Furthermore, a comprehensive staffing study by the new Police Chief, Gary Ratcliffe, has led to plans for increasing public safety staff annually for the next 5-6 years. The police department has also restructured its command staff and added three new police officer positions in 2025 and early 2026.

Federal Grant to Fund Comprehensive Pedestrian Safety and Traffic Calming Plan

A $250,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration has been awarded to develop a comprehensive pedestrian safety action plan and traffic calming strategy. This plan will holistically assess road and sidewalk users to identify improvement areas and enable access to federal funding for future implementation and construction. Additionally, pedestrian safety and traffic calming measures are planned along the West U to West Lane corridor, including enhanced crossings south of University Boulevard. An engineering study for further safety measures around parks, schools, churches, and main roadways will be considered later this year.
