Council Questions Internal Management of Tennis Courts Amidst Profitability Discussion
Councilmember Devinney initiated a discussion regarding item 2f on the Consent Calendar, concerning the management of tennis courts by Lifetime Tennis. While acknowledging Lifetime Tennis's positive performance and the agenda report's financial details (a $700,000+ profit share above 5%), Devinney questioned whether the city had explored managing the courts internally if they were so profitable. Staff clarified that Lifetime Tennis absorbs overhead costs (like marketing) that the city would have to bear, making internal management potentially more expensive. It was noted that this analysis hadn't been done in 6-7 years but could be part of a future RFQ/RFP process. Devinney also inquired about the services provided by Lifetime Tennis beyond court management, and staff confirmed they also provide instruction and manage tournament structures, similar to outside experts managing golf courses. The council ultimately approved item 2f.
