Urbana City Council Votes Against Landmark Status for Civic Center, Prioritizing Transit Center Development
The Urbana City Council voted against designating the Urbana Civic Center as a historic landmark. This decision was made after extensive public comment and council discussion, with the majority leaning towards prioritizing the potential development of a new transit center by MTD. Council members expressed concerns about the financial implications and logistical challenges of adaptive reuse versus demolition, as well as the potential delays landmark status could introduce to the transit project. The council also acknowledged that demolition of the Civic Center was already budgeted, and that further decisions regarding its fate would be made if MTD does not secure grant funding for the transit center. The council did approve a special use permit for a medical clinic at 909 North Cunningham Avenue after a verbal amendment to clarify the legal description.
