University Park Declares Waste and Recycling Workers Week

A proclamation was made declaring June 15th through June 20th, 2026, as Waste and Recycling Workers Week in the City of University Park. The proclamation recognized the diligent work of sanitation employees in keeping the community clean and healthy, highlighting their collection of 17,041 tons of solid waste in FY2025, with 23% being recyclable materials, and over 175,379 tons collected in the last decade. The Mayor and City Council expressed gratitude for the professionalism and dedication of these personnel.

Resident Raises Concerns Over Soaring Utility Costs and Large Home Impacts

A resident expressed concerns regarding increasing traffic, noise from leaf blowers, and the size of new homes. The primary concern highlighted was the escalating cost of city services, particularly water and stormwater fees. The resident noted significant increases in water (64%), sewer (42%), sanitation (24%), and stormwater (348%) fees since September 2021. The resident questioned the stormwater fee structure, which places homes in categories based on lot size and impervious surfaces, leading to higher fees for residents in areas with larger new homes, even if their personal water usage is low. The resident pointed out that the city's installation of a water storage tank under Karruth Park to manage runoff contributes to stormwater fees. The resident suggested a fairer assessment method for stormwater fees and reevaluation of artificial turf disadvantages.

DART Board Representative Appointment Tabled for Future Consideration

The City Council considered a resolution for the appointment of a representative to the DART Board of Directors. University Park, Richardson, and Addison currently split one representative. Richardson, as the largest city, nominates the appointee, with other cities agreeing or disagreeing. Richardson has nominated Gary Slagel again. A revision to Chapter 452 of the Transportation Code is anticipated, which would allow each member city its own appointment, though with a weighted vote based on population. This change is expected to be pursued in the next legislative session and may require future council action. The item was tabled.

City Council Approves Consent Agenda, Appoints Councilmember to Regional Transportation Council

The City Council considered the consent agenda, which included three items: the appointment of Councilmember Darrell Lane to the Regional Transportation Council, the appointment of members to various boards and committees and municipal court judges, and the minutes from the June 2nd City Council meeting. The Regional Transportation Council is a 16-county board responsible for metropolitan transportation planning and funding allocation. The board and committee appointments involve over 150 volunteers. The consent agenda was approved by a unanimous vote.
