South Saint Paul School Board Approves 2026-2027 Budget Amidst Financial Headwinds
The South Saint Paul School Board approved the fiscal year 2026-2027 budget proposal after a detailed presentation by the finance director. The budget addresses financial stressors and headwinds such as inflation, declining enrollment, and changes in compensatory funding. Despite these challenges, the district maintains a healthy fund balance, projected to be over $13.7 million, which exceeds the targeted minimum of 8% ($4.4 million). The budget allocates the majority of funds to labor (78%), with significant portions for supplies, capital planning, and outsourced services like transportation. Key focus areas for the coming year include proactive budget development to align with the strategic plan, analyzing enrollment trends to attract and retain students, and strengthening community connections. The board acknowledged the diligent financial tracking by the finance department, which helps mitigate risks faced by other districts not as attentive to their finances. A budget revision will be conducted in 3-4 months to assess the impact of current trends.
